Reflective Journal: Week 12 - Turntable
I've just made some adjustments to the moustache and hair. I added some more edgeloops across the moustache to help keep its shape a little. The hair could probably use some more structure as well and it's not quite finished (gaps where it connects to the head) but I don't think I have the time. I've adjusted where the hair sits behind the ear (where the ear will go).
We are planning on setting up and rendering the turntable at the Thursday workshop or earlier. A majority of the modelling is done - we've still just got the rest of the jacket (the fluffy details are a little finnicky to model), combining the vehicle parts, and the 3D ear model + attachment.
Jasper has combined the vehicle parts. There were a few parts that had too many edgeloops such as the wheel bars(?) which would have made rendering even lengthier so I've reduced some objects and deleted some duplicated objects that I think I've managed to identify. Antonio's parts have some topology issues around the curved surfaces. I probably could have been a little more active in checking in on their projects in order to notice this earlier as it is a little too late to do anything about it now (unless I spend my essay writing time fixing it up today...). Other than this, it looks really good. They managed to get all the small details in and it looks very accurate to the design we were given.
The clothes have been finished as well. The clothes look quite good, although the fluffy part of the jacket is in the same object as the rest of the jacket, meaning it can't have a separate shader. To include these details we would need to separate the parts into different objects or create a UV map that works around this. The vehicle's rails and the snake (which is meant to be striped) have this same issue but for the time we had and the complexity of the design, I think we did a great job regardless.
The object groups for all files need to be cleaned up a bit as well so I'm just doing that now.
The vehicle is meant to be much much larger than the character but I've set them up so that the character is big as well. If this assessment were more focused on the overall scene rather than the modelling, I would try to have the character at the right size and have the shot move between a close up to the character, and a wider shot of the vehicle.
I only used the basic colour shaders, skin shader and metal shader supplied with the turntable file.
When shading the model, I've realised that there were some lighting boxes (?) on the rifle model. I had been wondering what those frames were for. I believe I deleted some of these...
The ear model was finished during the render and we likely won't have the time to update the referenced files and re-render the scene. I had planned for this week to be a bit lighter on PROD142 work so that my group had time to focus on our other courses and, as such, I don't have the time to do this. The lack of ears is surprisingly not that noticeable in the render though in my opinion.
