Reflective Journal: Week 11 - Attaching Things

Monday

I've finished modelling the hair. I've managed to avoid any triangles or n-gons although I'll need to connect it to the scalp a bit better (if I find the time) and that might involve some triangles. These would mostly be in hidden spots such as behind the ear and near the nape of the neck.

Modelled the inside of the mouth. I'll stop it here because the back of his mouth will mostly be covered by the teeth. I mostly felt I needed to model the interior since the inside of the cheeks would be showing. Will probably need to model gums but I'll save this for if I have time since it's quite an unnoticeable detail.

Modelled tear ducts.

I made the neck 16 sides and managed to resolve an existing triangle in a kinda rough way I think but it doesn't matter too much since it's in a hidden area.

I did adjusted the body's neck to be 16 sides as well.

I was having a lot of trouble with parts of the head rotating, moving and scaling separately when I tried to fit it onto the body. I've combined all the pieces into one object (in incremental saves 006 & 007. 005 is the non-combined save for the head. This is a note to self).

I've attached the head and hands to the body. He's still missing ears. His head looks a little uncomfortably large. This is following the model sheet given. It might look a little more uncanny here because of the detail in his face. I'm hoping it'll look more cohesive with the clothing made and added.

Antonio has modelled the clothes up to the belt. I'll get him working off of this model of the character with the adjusted neck size and head present when modelling the rest of the clothing.

Jasper has not gotten back to us with updates on his parts of the vehicle so I will need to follow up with him. This is not giving me the greatest confidence that he'll be able to model the ears for us as well. I wouldn't mind doing the ears myself since I don't think our character requires highly detailed ears so they should be fairly quick and straightforward for me, but I would like to give Jasper a fair share of work.

Later in the week:

I ended up redoing the head combination because having them all combined was not a good idea. I combined the halves of each separate aspect then made sure all objects had their pivot points placed at the origin point, then cleared the history and freeze transformed all objects.

> Update from week 12: I've just realised that I could have grouped all the objects and that probably would have worked and been more efficient.

I've shared the body file with Antonio so he'll be able to replace the old model with that and he is working on the coat now.

Jasper is still working on the rifle, and will put the vehicle together and make the ears.

I modelled the hat as well. This is good for getting me to practice modelling hard surfaces as opposed to the organic modelling I've been doing. I've got a good basic shape down for the hat.

I added some edge loops to sharpen some edges.

Next Steps:

For our final week, we'll need to put everything in the scene, add some shaders, and then render it. We'll need to have all of our modelling done earlier in the week to give us the time to do this.
